Tesla to launch new energy tariffs

Richard Simmonds • Nov 03, 2020

Speculation about Elon Musk’s Tesla entering the UK energy market has been rife for months and now it appears that the company is planning to offer its own electricity tariffs.

Tesla Energy Plan

According to the company’s website, its plans to engrain itself in the UK market is moving ahead as it is offering homeowners with an installed solar system and its Tesla Powerwall can now join the Tesla Energy Plan.

The Energy Plan is described as the lowest flat rate electricity tariff in the UK and that its customers will be able to save up to 75% on their average electricity bill.

Such a tariff could shake up the energy market and add to the already high competition as other energy suppliers are likely to adopt and introduce similar tariffs as the drive towards green energy increases.

Tesla launched its ‘Tesla Energy Plan’ program in the UK back in August following an upstream test phase. Initially, however, a Tesla vehicle in the household was a prerequisite for participation. Earlier this week, Tesla opened the offer to customers without an electric car.

Powerplant

The website description goes on to say that any customers that take up the new tariff will become part of Tesla’s virtual power plant in the UK meaning that the Tesla Powerwall, (the electricity storage facility designed for the temporary storage of locally generated solar energy) is then managed by Tesla.

The Powerwall is connected to other households that are part of the Powerplant and allows the home to draw, store or feed electricity back into the energy grid where required.

Customers could also receive favourable electricity rates if they adopt the full suite of Tesla offerings, namely if they have a Powerwall and Tesla electric vehicle.

According to Tesla, the tariff amounts to just 8 pence per kilowatt-hour. For customers who have a Powerwall but not a Tesla EV, they will have 11 pence kilowatt-hour.
