Richard Simmonds • Feb 10, 2021

The winners of the 2021 Uswitch energy awards have been revealed with Octopus Energy winning many categories and claiming the energy supplier of the year award for a second year in a row.

Dominant performance from Octopus Energy

The 2021 Uswitch Energy Awards ranked the best energy suppliers across 14 categories based on the responses from more than 17,000 energy consumers in an independent survey in association with YouGov. The winners being those that achieve the highest scores from customers.

Octopus Energy top the top prize for a second consecutive year after its customer reviews earned it a score of 92% in customer satisfaction. The energy supplier also scooped the Uswitch Energy Supplier of the Year 2021 title.

As well as winning the top two awards, Octopus Energy also won an award for being the most supportive
company during the Covid-19 pandemic and scored big when it came to quick waiting times and the support they offer when it comes to any energy billing issues during the lockdowns.

Octopus also won five other categories including: The Most Likely to Recommend, Best Value for Money, Best Deal for you, Best Customer Service, Best Billing Service, Best Online Services, and Best Account Management categories.

Octopus has continued to scoop up market share from the more traditional larger suppliers in recent years and has set its tentacles on becoming a global energy business after moves into the US, European and Australian energy markets.

The runner up is…

Taking second place in the Energy Supplier of the Year award was Bulb with a customer satisfaction score of 88%. They also came second in the Uswitch supplier of the year category. This means that the energy supplier has come in second for two consecutive years.

It wasn’t just customer satisfaction that energy suppliers were ranked on other areas with the most importance to customers. Other categories included the best deals, value for money and how good a supplier’s green energy offerings are.

Challenger suppliers dominate

The 2021 awards showed just how competitive the energy market is but also that smaller suppliers can make a big difference to customer experiences. The best performers when it came to customer satisfaction were all smaller/challenger energy suppliers.

Other big winners were Utility Warehouse that snagged the top awards for the Best Meter Reading Services and the Best Incentives/Rewards.

Utilita meanwhile won awards for Best Energy Efficiency and Best Smart Meter Installation.

The awards also covered areas where technology is revolutionising the energy supply market. The award for Best Mobile App was won by green energy supplier Pure Planet which made its debut in the awards.

So Energy won the top prize for Best Transfer Process category with a score of 93% customer satisfaction.

The spread of award winners this year shows how challenger brands have invested enormously in their customer service in recent years and are now reaping the rewards. With the Government setting high aspirations for the UK’ green energy targets, the sector will continue to see and implement big changes and innovations in the year to come,” said Will Owen, energy expert at Uswitch.com.

Covid-19 challenges

2020 was an unprecedented year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and government enforced lockdowns. Energy suppliers were faced with immense challenges but have handled them well.

“Last year was a year like no other, but our results show that most energy suppliers stepped up to the plate to help customers. Even during an incredibly challenging year, Octopus Energy won the customer satisfaction award with a rating of 92%, the same score as the previous year, emphasising how successfully suppliers have offered customers support and ensured short waiting times on customer service calls,” added Owen.
