According to the energy regulator, Orbit Energy, Simply Your Energy, Delta Gas and Power, Social Energy Supply and Whoop Energy need to cough up £575,000 to meet their renewable obligations or face immediate action.
Each of the five suppliers failed to pay what they owe on the final deadline of November 10th and if they don’t cough up immediately they are likely to have their licences revoked or face a substantial financial penalty.
The bulk of the outstanding money is owed by Orbit who need to pay £450,000. Orbit is looking like it is on the brink of collapse as last week the electricity system administrator, Elexon said that it had defaulted and banned it from taking on any new customers.
Delta Gas and Power reportedly owe the regulator £46,701 whilst Whoop Energy owe them £19,013 for the feed in tariff scheme.
A revocation of their licences would result in the companies being forced to exit the market adding another five failed suppliers to the twenty two that have gone bust so far this year.
With wholesale gas prices ticking back up due to rising tensions between the EU and Belarus, already incredibly high pressure on suppliers is likely to remain for the near future.
A failure to pay their renewables obligations is often a major indicator that a company is in financial distress and is a good indicator that a suppliers will soon be forced to exit the market.
