450,000 Consumers Switched Energy Supplier in January

Matt Olney • Feb 20, 2020

The number of Consumers switching Energy Supplier increased 17% year-on-year in January a sign that 2020 could become another record-breaking year.

Strong start to the year

The figures published by Energy UK showed that nearly 450,000 people switched their energy supplier in what is normally a quiet month. Compared to 2019’s January figure of 382,665 today’s figures suggest that the market is continuing to follow 2019s trend.

“January has traditionally been a slow month for switching so a figure of nearly 450,000 customers shows that momentum is continuing following a record 2019. On average, there were 12 switches every minute last year and it’s encouraging to see more and more customers getting in the habit of saving money by looking for the best deals available from nearly 60 suppliers on the market – not forgetting the many more on top of these figures who have moved to different tariffs with their existing supplier.” Said Audrey Gallacher, Energy UK’s Interim Chief Executive.

Smaller suppliers are benefiting

Challenger brands and smaller suppliers are continuing to benefit from the increasing number of switches with 35% of all switches being from larger companies to small and middle tier suppliers.

Customers fed up with poor service from the large brands are increasingly looking for better quality in the smaller companies.
