23.6 million Smart meters now installed across the UK – Discover how Dyball’s DCC Adapter can help your energy supply business

Richard Simmonds • Mar 15, 2021

According to the latest government data, over a third of small businesses and households across the UK now have operating smart meters. With the numbers increasing by the day discover how Dyball Associates DCC Adapter can help your energy supply business.

The latest smart meter rollout data

The data released by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) reveals that smart meters have penetrated 42% of the market so far with 23.6 million meters installed.

Out of that figure, 81% of the installed smart meters were operating in smart mode. The vast majority of meters installed so far are the SMETS1 type with 15.7 million. Controversy over these types of smart meters continues, with recent data showing that some energy suppliers continue to install tens of thousands of them rather than the more advanced SMETS2 meters.

‘SMETS1 meters are now being moved onto the national communications network, run by the Data Communications Company (DCC) so that consumers regain and keep smart services if they switch supplier.

Meters are being enrolled remotely, without consumers needing to take any action, and priority is being given to those which have temporarily lost smart functionality. SMETS2 meters are connected to the DCC’s network from the point of installation, so are already compatible between energy suppliers,’ said the BEIS in its report.

Covid-19 impact on smart meter rollout

The number of smart meters installed has been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns.

Despite the challenges presented by the lockdowns the number of smart meter installations increased 4-5% over the past year. The second quarter of 2020 saw the sharpest drop, but installation numbers rose strongly in the fourth quarter by rising 14% on the third quarter of 2020.

Critical mass

In February 2021, the DCC reported that it had connected the 10 millionth smart meter to its network and has been working on connecting SMETS1 meters via its enrolment and adoption process.

This means that, although a Smart Meter may have lost its smart functionally when a consumer switched their energy supplier when it is enrolled into the new DCC system that functionally will come back, and the consumer will be able to change suppliers without technical problems.

How can Dyball’s DCC Adapter help you?

To operate Smart Meters, energy suppliers have to connect to the infrastructure provided by the DCC.

This requires significant capital investment which may prove challenging to market participants especially new entrants to the energy supply market.

Our DCC Adapter enables energy suppliers, network operators and other users to integrate their IT systems seamlessly with the DCC.

Thanks to the expertise of our IT team we’ve built a bespoke DCC Adaptor in house. This has provided Dyball Associates with a unique and thorough understanding of the DCC processes, allowing us to highlight and remedy any pitfalls that energy suppliers may encounter.

Dyball Associates DCC Adapter integrates seamlessly with our other SAAS services, including our own energy billing software and CRM system. This allows for a smooth automation of many day-to-day processes and our Business Orchestration layer (BOL).

Thanks to our accredited testing, any company aiming to enter the energy supply market will find it far easier to do so.

Dyball Associates can minimise the downtime to receive your industry qualifications and get your energy supply business approved faster than by taking other routes to market.
